As many of you know, one of our BFA alums, MC Civil (BFA 04) is from Haiti. While I have not heard from him directly, the following is posted on his facebook site and I don’t think he will mind my sharing with y’all: “Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for my family and friends in Haiti. Early Saturday morning around 4:30 am I received a phone call from my family. Most of them are well; some are without homes, food, and water. Three of my cousins did not survive. They were in school, and their school collapsed. A year ago I started raising awareness about the need for clean drinking water in Haiti. Now the need for water is more important than ever before in Haiti. As you know, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. I am concentrating all my strengths to provide my brothers and sisters in Haiti with clean, safe drinking water. I need your support in order to do this. Please provide us with your support.” MC held a Hydrate Haiti Fundraiser in West Hollywood on 1/23. If you want to learn more about his project, or hopefully donate, go to: http://www.viewater.org/

From Andrew Adams (BFA 08) “Willie Concepcion (Theater BA 09) and I won a video contest hosted by Worldnomads.com -- the prize of which is a 6-week all-expenses paid trip to Australia! We will be, specifically, road tripping from South Australia's Adelaide up to North Australia's Darwin, straight through the heart of the Outback desert. The catch is that each week we have to post two 3-minute documentaries about our travels, and then a final 6-minute doc at the end of the whole trip. That final documentary will be one of seven, the best of which (as chosen by voters) nets its makers $10,000!! So we're going to do our best to make FSU proud... And to make some money. You can see the announcement at http://vantastic.worldnomads.com/index.php/van-tastic/american-come... <<a href="http://vantastic.worldnomads.com/index.php/van-tastic/american-comedy-duo-win-van-tastic-nt/">http://vantastic.worldnomads.com/index.php/van-tastic/american-comedy-duo-win-van-tastic-nt/> and our audition videos are online at http://www.youtube.com/user/theawkwardnation <<a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/theawkwardnation">http://www.youtube.com/user/theawkwardnation> .”

From Kyley Robinson: “I actually moved back to New Orleans :) I teach 2nd grade, and I totally love it! I still plan on making things for kids, but, the city needed good teachers, and so here I am J”

From KT Comkowycz (BFA 040 “Aug. - Dec. I worked my first full season of Network TV. It was a FOX TV show Dollhouse, which was a good show, but too complicated for the average viewer. I was the B Camera 2nd AC, and very lucky to be working a good union job during a slow season. In July, I traveled to NYC for an indi. Feature. I was the A Camera 1st AC for “HappyThankYouMorePlease,” and it's debut. Will be Sundance. It’s a wonderfully written and directed film with a starry cast. So, I'm going to Sundance at the end of the mo.”

From Jennie Jarvis (BFA 00): Been a while since I updated where I've been on the WR, so here we go. Biggest thing for me right now is that, not only am I the official screenwriting instructor for UNF, but I'm also coordinating the Screenwriting Competition for the Jacksonville Film Festival and am on their programming committee as well. It's a big job, but I can't wait for the screenplays to start coming in (we start taking submissions May 1st). It also looks like I'll be teaching a workshop in conjunction with the festival on making sure your script is ready to submit to a festival, agent or production company in mid-April. For the screenwriting competition, we're looking for executives, producers and agents who might want to be flown to Jacksonville to listen to pitches by our winning finalists. Anyone interested, shoot me a message. Aside from the Jax Festival, my feature film "Focal Point" is doing the rounds at festivals right now. So far, it's gotten great reactions every time it's shown, although no awards - YET! I also participated in a series of short documentaries (I co-directed one and edited a second) featuring cultural portraits around the St. John's River. We had a screening a few weeks ago at the local Contemporary Art Museum, and it looks like the local PBS affiliate may want to pick up the series. Finally, I completed one master's degree in English (Film Studies) and am in the process of obtaining a second in a program that has me working closely with the heads of the screenwriting at both USC (Brighde Mullins) and UCLA (Hal Ackerman). It's an AMAZING program that is really making me fall back in love with my own writing. And here I thought I would be isolated from film when I moved back to Florida!!! Whew.... If you read all that, I'm impressed....

From Iman Zawahry (MFA 08) “The Princess Grace Foundation film that I shot "UnderCover" is premeiring at the Gasparilla Film Festival in Tampa March 18-20. Charee Lanae (Rickia Page MFA 09) is interning at Scott Free Television in LA. Ariya Watty (BFA 09) is a busy girl interning at Village Road Show, Bona Fide Productions and Infinity Management!

From Jamie Fox, FSU Theatre alum: “Check out the promo for my solo show with the FANTASTIC and talented Nia Vardalos! It's on Funny or Die! Please take a few seconds and enjoy the short and give it a FUNNY!!!! And then pass in on to your friends to do the same! Thanks for the support! http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/77555f4f00/jamie-m-fox-s-mazeltov-... <<a href="http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/77555f4f00/jamie-m-fox-s-mazeltov-cocktail-opening-night">http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/77555f4f00/jamie-m-fox-s-mazeltov-cocktail-opening-night>

We had a marvelous vacation, playing hard: snorkeling, kayaking, tubing, zip-lining, taking advantage of all of the outdoor activities available in the Windward Islands. Hard work, but someone has to do it. Our trip was marred by the murder of one of the passengers on our ship while she was on a beach in Antigua. Since the ship was small, 200 passengers, and she was part of a wedding party, we all felt we knew her. Very sad and scary. A life lesson in not wandering off on your own wherever you are.

FROM THE FSU MAILING LIST

From Ashley Miller (MFA 08) “Does anyone have a copy of a Glee script from an episode (not the pilot script)? Ashley Miller ashleyfmiller@gmail.com

From Marc Wiskemann (MFA 96) “Since there are some alums out there with Atlanta area connections, Ithought I'd let everybody know that my short film "My Dearest Love" is going to be part of the Macon (MaGA) Film festival in February. It's scheduled to screen at 7pm on opening night (Thursday Feb 18th) at the historic Douglass Theatre. I'm not going to be able to make the festival as I'm actually going to be at a different fest that weekend, but if anybody's going to MaGA, check out my short.”

From Catherine Hurd (MFA 94) “My husband taught a class in Photovoltaics or Solar Electriciy in East Los Angeles, and one of his former students has formed a group that travels to Central America to install solar in out-of-the-way villages where the people have no electricity. She is looking for someone to help her film their next excursion. So I thought I'd put this out there for anyone interested. Please respond to her directly if you are interested. Her email is at the end ofher post, which follows.
Have you been dreaming of making a film in Central America about installing solar power? If you are interested in renewable energy, are fluent in Spanish, and like helping others, we need you!!! Power to the People is a non-profit organization the brings solar power to rural villages in Central America, and we are looking for a film professional interested in filming our next solar installation in Nicaragua in April, 2010. The purpose of the film is to document our solar installation on a small public school in Nicaragua from start to finish. We will be working side by side with members of the community and will also have 10 US volunteers traveling with us to install the system. The film will not only serve to document our trip, it will be used to show potential donors and interested volunteers what Power to the People is all about. Power to the People is an all-volunteer organization and our budget is very tight, so preference will go to someone that is personally interested in volunteering their time for this project, but we encourage all interested folks to apply. Please email Jenean Smith at Jenean@powertothepeople.org for more information. www.powertothepeople.org.”
