Florida State University - Film School Network

We hope you will come share the night with us as we present a program of our best short films for 2011 at the 19th annual FSU Film School screening in Los Angeles.  The screening will take place on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at the Writers Guild of America Theater located at 135 South Doheny Drive, one and a half blocks south of Wilshire Boulevard, in Beverly Hills, California.  Screening begins at 7:30pm.  This screening event is free and open to the public. There will be a pre-screening reception hosted by the College of Business at 6:30pm. (Please contact Leslie Mille for more information at lmille@cob.fsu.edu  There is a Film School hosted reception to follow the screening for our industry guests, alumni and friends.  You may contact Sabrina Reisinger at 850-644-0453 or via email: sreisinger@film.fsu.edu for information.  Looking forward to seeing you!

From more than 2,500 scripts, judge Francis Ford Coppola and the American Zoetrope staff honored 10 top finalists, among them our own Ruth Hernandez (MFA 98)!  The winner and the 10 finalists will be considered for representation by major agencies and their scripts will be considered for film option and development by leading production companies.   Way to go, Ruth!!!!

From Jesse Barksdale (BFA  07)  “I'm in the process of fund-raising for a feature of mine called "Six Slugs for Mario". It's a dark comedy about a guy that starts having visions commanding him to murder Mario Lopez (the actor that played AC Slater on Saved By The Bell). To help with fund-raising, we shot a short tone clip, and are now looking for a composer to do music for the tone clip. Ideally this would be someone who is also interested in composing for the feature, which we're aiming to shoot at the beginning of next year. Anyway, I wanted to reach out to the alumni network to see if there was anyone that might be interested, or had any recommendations of people that might be good for this project. I'm looking for someone who can do some intense electronic music, similar to Skrillex (http://youtu.be/WSeNSzJ2-Jw?t=25s) or Crystal Castles (http://youtu.be/tZu3EUVJ8-4). I'm based in New York, so that would probably be ideal, but I'm open to composers from all over. Also, it is a paying job. The best way to reach me is through SixSlugsForMario@gmail.com. Thanks so much!”

From Ben Solovey (BFA  07)  “We're in the home stretch on the 'Manos: The Hands of Fate' Restoration Kickstarter (http://kck.st/uucMGt) with only three days to go and I'm pleased to announce that 621 backers have just helped us cross the $38,000 mark! As a little treat for our donors I've been releasing the first clips from our initial test scan and some side by side comparisons (Clip #1: http://youtu.be/Y-YYqLrP79Y?hd=1 , Comparison #1: http://youtu.be/Uae58589aec?hd=1 ) to demonstrate what an improvement this new material will give us. I've been happy to see so many FSU alums supporting us and getting the word out- the fundraiser couldn't have exceeded expectations without your enthusiasm! There's still time for followers of the project to donate, get their name in the restoration credits and help us with the creation of extra features, a commentary track with members of the original cast and our final goal, a newly minted archival negative.”

From Jim Ed Wills (MFA 11)  “I found this place called Home Video Studio in Richmond, VA. They specialize in converting any type of video format to DVD. Anywhere form 8mm reel film to VHS. But they also take projects like Documentary type interviews on family life. Right now I'm editing a family video, adding pictures and music. The store is a branch, but this particular location has only been open for a month. When I came on, it sounded like I could learn some editing things from him. It turns out that he's never used final cut pro and needed me to teach him. He comes from a radio and sound background and does voice work so he is familiar with the concepts of editing, he's just never used Final Cut before. Needless to say, I'm learning about how to negotiate, how rare my skills from FSU actually are. I'm learning that not many people know about what we know so I have to convince them that I know a thing or two about movie making.”

From Joshua Mikel (BA Theatre/ Creative Writing '07): The video I produced for my friends Fake Problems, directed by Bobby Marinelli (MFA '10) DP'd by Kyle Bart Reid (MFA '11) edited by Jamie Kassler (MFA '11)  and crewed by Tara K Clark (MFA '11) had it's premiere through the MTV networks last week.
