Independent Spirit Awards: Lynn Shelton, who won the Acura Someone to Watch Award in 2009, turned up at the podium this year as the winner of the John Cassavetes Award for Humpday, a film she wrote and directed. Named after the godfather of independent cinema, the prize is given to a film made for less than $500,000. Humpday was edited by Nat Sanders (BFA 02).

From Brook Durham (BFA 94) “My latest SyFy movie just started shooting today (March 8, 2010) in Toronto. It’s been getting a lot of press on the internet as Felicia Day has been cast in the titular role of “red.” From the press release --
"Red" is part of a new Syfy series of original efforts aimed at offering new takes on classic fairy tales and myths. The series launched last month on February 27 with "Beauty and the Beasts: A Dark Tale." The roots of that story should be fairly self-evident, based on the title. Aladdin, Sinbad the Sailor and Hansel & Gretel are all targeted by the network for inclusion in the series. As of this past Friday, I’m also writing the Hansel film mentioned in the release.”
Here's Syfy's logline for "Red": In the action-packed Red, Red (Day) brings her fiancé home, where he meets the family and learns about their business – hunting werewolves. He’s skeptical until bitten by a werewolf. When her family insists he must be killed, Red tries saving him. Red also stars Kavan Smith (Stargate Atlantis) and Stephen McHattie (Watchmen). Red is produced by Angela Mancuso and Vesuvius Productions in association with Chesler Perlmutter Productions. I’ve attached some links as well --

From Tanya Spann Roche (MFA 97) “I just wanted to let you know that Jane Pauley is returning to the Today Show with a series called "Your Life Calling" in partnership with AARP, and I edited the inaugural segment which will air on Tuesday, March 9th, between 8 and 9 am. I met with Jane today, and she's so nice--it's really flattering to get compliments on your work from an Emmy-award winning journalist :)”

From Greg Marcks (MFA 00) “Script Frenzy, which runs a one-month screenplay writing challenge, ran an article I wrote on preparing to write a feature screenplay: http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/eng/node/3578427

Heard from Shawn Matlock (BFA 94) this week. He’s still a trailer editorat Cellulloid Heroes. Just finished two trailers recently: The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond and Blood Done Sign My Name. Both of them are online at Apple.com and JoBlo.com. I have a lovely growing family. Met my wife Colleen in L.A. and we got married in 2000. Since the wedding was in Santa Monica, a bunch of FSU alumni attended. Colleen and I have two beautiful daughters: Kelly and Lauren, ages 5 and 3.

From Ivette Garcia (MFA 03) “Hi! My friends: actor/writer/producer Alexandra Barreto and writer/director/actor Rider Strong are making a short film and they need help. They're fantastic people and very talented. This is what she sent me/what they need: “We’re trying to find someone who would be willing to deal with food on set…craft service and meals. This would involve getting a basic breakfast ready in the morning (bagels, coffee, etc), snacks during the day, keeping the coffee flowing and then lunch for 20 – 25 people. Hopefully that person would be comfortable doing the shopping for breakfast, all snacks and supplies. Lunch would most likely be ordered from somewhere local, but we would want that person to do all the coordinating. Do we know anyone who would be willing to take on that challenge? They would probably want to stay up there on Sunday, March 21st, since they would have to have breakfast ready to go by 6am on Monday.” If anyone is interested, please e-mail me and I'll forward along your info to Alex & Rider.

From Don Guarisco (BFGA 96) “just thought I'd send a note to tell you about a blog I've started. It's called Schlockmania and it's a survey of pop culture's more esoteric and unusual corners. I post four times a week and the content includes film, music and book reviews, as well as the occasional aesthetics-minded thoughtpiece. The site is only a few months old but it's getting a positive response thus far. Some of the posts have even drawn comments in their comment sections from FSU Film alumni like Neil Butler and Jeremy Zauder. Anyone who is interested is welcome to visit the site at http://www.schlockmania.com <http://www.schlockmania.com> . I recommend that newcomers start with the site introduction, which can be found at http://www.schlockmania.com/schlockmania-is-open/ a href="http://www.schlockmania.com/schlockmania-is-open/%3E">http://www.schlockmania.com/schlockmania-is-open/>; . I hope any new visitors enjoy the experience and I encourage them to comment on the posts if they feel so inspired.”

From Susan Bell (MFA 05) LA: “ShadowMachine (Robot Chicken, Titan Maximum, Moral Orel) has an immediate need for part-time interns to work in the producer's office starting this month. Must be proficient w/ Mac, Word & Excel, with FCP, Final Draft, Photoshop and FileMaker a major plus. Prospective interns should have an interest in development/producing as this is not an animation/production position. Please send cover letter and resume (pdf preferred) to smfresume@gmail.com, attn: Susan Bell. Please no phone calls.”

With less than three months until the final episode of “Lost,” ABC celebrates the series' dedicated fans, providing them with the opportunity to become a part of "Lost" history. Sponsored by Kia Motors, the Ultimate “Lost” Fan Promo Contest gives fans the tools to express and share their passion for the groundbreaking hit drama series through the production of an original promo which will air on the ABC Television Network the week prior to the highly anticipated finale, airing on a special night, Sunday, May 23 (9:00-11:00 p.m.), preceded by a recap special from 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET, on ABC.
"For the past six years, the fans of 'Lost' have shown extreme passion and unwavering commitment. Entries will vie for the opportunity to be broadcast on-air in the week leading up to the final episode of “Lost.” In addition to having their promo televised, the Grand Prize winner will receive a trip to Los Angeles to attend the series’ special finale party. ABC.com has made available a robust archive of pre-cleared “Lost” assets including video, still images, music, sound bites and special effects audio that fans can use to create their pieces. Additionally, the site is offering an online mash-up tool that can be used to create videos. Original promos can be uploaded to ABC.com through March 21, 2010. The top creative and original entries that promote the series’ finale will be evaluated by a special panel of judges, including “Lost” executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, as well as executives from ABC Entertainment. Once the top five videos are selected by the special panel, fans will be able to go to ABC.com April 19 through April 23 to cast their vote for the Grand Prize winner. Wish everyone could see the hallway to the Dean's Offices in the Film
School. They have recently posted what will be a somewhat revolving gallery of thesis posters, along with a plaque beside each poster with the director's picture, name, hometown and a synopsis of the film. It looks marvelous!

We’re going to Pensacola tomorrow for a long beach weekend with a bunch of family and friends. The weather in Tallahassee has been dreadful, rain and cold, so we are hoping for some sunny days!
