Florida State University - Film School Network

Congratulations to Aloura Charles (BFA 97). She was given the Emerging Filmmaker Award during the awards ceremony for last week’s Tallahassee Film Festival!!!

After 14 years with the Film School, Marie Behm has announced her retirement. The Film School will never be the same without her. Her last day on staff will be Thursday, April 30th. We are planning a big send-off party for her at the Film School and are gathering cards and letters from everyone who knew her, to present to her at the party. Marie worked with the undergraduate program of the Film School, but enjoyed knowing all of the graduate students who came through since 1995. Cards or letters can be sent to LINDA HENSLEY, or emailed to Linda for her to collect. We are hoping to collect them all by no later than Monday, April 27th, so time is short. Her retirement reception will be held on Thursday, April 30th in the Film School Lobby at 2:00 – 3:00 – everyone is invited. Email letters for Marie to Linda at: lhensley@film.fsu.edu; make the subject line LETTER FOR MARIE Or mail it to: Linda Hensley, A3100 University Center, FSU Film School, Tallahassee, FL 32306-2350

Filmmaker in Residence Valerie Scoon has received funding from the Florida Association for Volunteer Action in the Caribbean and the Americas (FAVACA) to return to Granada to complete filming on her documentary Colonialism in Granada. She will be in Granda for ten days beginning April 22 and will be accompanied by Ian Weir as her camera person. Kathryn Fuss (BFA 08) has been co-editing with Ian on footage shot previously. Valerie will be lecturing at the University of St. Georges on this topic, for a class that is studying Caribbean Identity.

From Jerry Smith (MFA 00) “guess my last sentence didn't actually cover all my crimes, so I'm back in Afghanistan for another year. There's plenty to do, or at least I'll find plenty to do. Keep tabs if you're interested on my blog: www.combatfrogger.info. Basically, this is just an attempt to find an audience in my contact list for my weekly updates. Please let me know what's going on back home... that's something I like to do to keep busy and it's something to look forward to.”

Thomas Jackson (MFA 98) is getting ready to move from NYC to Sycamore, FL, about 40 miles from Tallahassee. He’s putting out the offer of a free trip to New York (gas and lodging) to someone with a Van, in return for a ride down to Florida. “It would be great it if it was someone associated with the Film School. It'd be perfect timing with the FSU screening and the Tribeca Film Festival. I'm up for paying for gas round trip (not from LA of course) and sharing my studio apartment for a few days if someone wants to check out the City. I'll be mainly packing and tying up lose ends. But I'm sure I could find some time to show someone around a little. And being that my Apartment is in the East Village - an incredible neighborhood and central to so much they would get an awesome New York experience.” If you have van and are interested, contact Thomas at Thomas Jackson southernfilmmaker@gmail.com

From Nick Economides (MFA 08) “My short "one little step" made it into a film competition at www.thedoorpost.com. Voting is open the entire month of April, after which ten finalists will be determined to receive a grant to make another short film for The Doorpost Project eligible for a cash prize. I would be ever so grateful for any support and anyone willing to vote for my film online. If you want to watch and vote for my film, you can search for it and click "vote" when viewing it, and the website will put that film as the first one of your five movies required to watch in the queue. Also, before voting, each viewer (“Reviewer”) must “join” the Doorpost Film Project website by creating a free account at www.thedoorpost.com. Each Reviewer will be required to watch five films in order to vote for any of them. Each Reviewer will place a vote in seven (7) categories for each film, and will be required to write a unique comment for each film. The Reviewer will be required to vote on all 5 films. Once votes are cast, the Voting Queue will refresh with 5 films for the Reviewer to continue if they wish. If the Reviewer does not complete the voting process on all of the 5 films in their queue, none of their votes for that block will be counted.”

Big thanks to Ernest Goodly (MFA 92) who will represent the Film School at the Palm Beach International Film Festival’s Student Showcase of Films Award Ceremony on Tuesday, April 28.

From Meghan Robertson (BFA 03) “A producer of Imax and 3D films needs an editor ASAP. “Thank you for helping out, any and all inquires should be sent to; rgordon@rpgproductions.com > again, looking for someone with “theme park / ride film” experience, shot in HD. Edwin Escalante, Vice President, RPG Productions Inc. 632 S. Glenwood Pl. Burbank Ca 91506 office: 1-(818)-848-0240 mobile: 1-(818)-254-7256 www.rpgproductions.com >”

So help me out here – someone must know how to contact Jonathan Lang (MFA 03).

“Citysearch is all about discovering great things and we’re looking to discover great new filmmakers, animators and artists. To celebrate our site relaunch and the return of living local, we’re looking to give up-and-coming filmmakers a TV platform to tell a story about the city they call home. It’s your city, so it’ll be your story to tell however you s3ee fit. You’ll shoot it (with funds from us), we’ll air it and we’ll give it a red carpet premiere. We only have one requirement: your story be about your five favorite things your neighborhood has to offer. It oculd be your five favorite dive bars, your five favoriate dessert destinations, or whatever. The cities we’re focusing on first are NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington, DC. If you live or have lived in one of these cities and have a story to tell about your neighborhood, we’d love to talk to you. Send a bio and any samples of your work to citystories@hanftraboy.com by April 24 to confirm your entry and we’ll send you details.” (Note: there will be a little leeway re the 4/24/ deadline but let them know very quickly if you are interested).
